The History of Cheap Sunglasses

The history of sunglasses have a dark, but surprising, beginning. Forms sunglasses can be traced back to Roman Emperor Nero. He used polished, emerald green gems to watch gladiator competitions during the bright sunlight. This early method was the beginning of what would become a common fashion accessory.

The invention of cheap sunglasses was somewhere between 1268 and 1289. A painting done by Thommaso da Modena in 1352 is believed to be the earliest documentation of the tinted specs. More paintings followed as wearing the optical frames became a fashionable symbol of honor and distiction.

Around the twelfth century and before 1430, cheap sunglasses were worn by Judges in the Courts of China. These were made of smoky quartz rather than emeralds. Rather than protecting the wearer from the sun's rays, these cheap sunglasses were used as a way to conceal the expression of the Judges. Who knew professional poker players were actually taking cues from the ancient Chinese? Prescription sunglasses were developed in Italy in 1430 and were later also used by the Chinese Judges.

Prescription lenses were invented around the 1600s. It wasn't until the mid-18th century that James Ayscough developed blue and green corrective lenses. This was the beginning of cheap sunglasses that were also used in a corrective manner.
Believe it or not, it wasn't until the 20th Century that cheap sunglasses were designed to protect the eyes. Around 1929 Sam Foster started selling cheap sunglasses in Woolworth stores along beach towns such as Atlantic City and New Jersey. The so-called 'Foster Grants' became the first mass produced cheap sunglasses sold in stores.

In the 1930′s the Army Air Corps asked Bausch & Lomb to develop cheap sunglasses that would efficiently reduce sun glare for pilots. The optical company eventually came up with cheap sunglasses that were tinted dark green and absorbed much light.
Once Edward H. Land invented the Polaroid filter, the technology was incorporated with cheap sunglasses and they quickly gained wide popularity. Movie stars were early adopters of the tinted shades and soon the fad made its way throughout all of America by 1936.

This was around the time that the popular aviator glasses became popular. Ray Ban was the first cheap sunglasses company to utilize anti-glare lenses that used polarization. This feature ultimately became popular with pilots, hence the name we now recognize.

By the 1970′s influential fashion designers decided to take the plunge into creating their own lines of cheap sunglasses. These clothing designers made sunglasses a fashion and status statement for all.
In 2007, stars are still hiding behind their oversized designer sunglasses, making fashion statements and protecting their eyes from the harmful effects of UV rays. With modern technology and improvements, sunglasses have continued to evolve. We have gone from holding green gems up to our eyes to cheap sunglasses that can be purchased for only $9. Who knows what they'll come up with next!

Spring is in the air, and our company is in full bloom!

We've just received word that NineAPair will be featured in the June issue of Woman's World magazine. This will be the second time the publication has highlighted our product. Not only is this a great promotional opportunity, but it speaks volumes about the quality of our product. We're very excited for the issue to be put on newsstands.

"I’ll point out that sunglasses will protect not just against basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas and melanoma,” she says, “but also against the formation of wrinkles like crow’s feet and the unsightly thickening of the skin that can sometimes be caused by UV exposure.”

As a general standard, tinted lenses block 99% of UVA and UVB rays. The article also states that UV 400 protection is also important. Luckily, nearly all of our stock has UV 400 protection. If you're on the water a lot, it's also good to use polarized lenses.

As a way of saying thank you for a great year, we're offering free shipping on all orders beginning December 15th. You'll have until December 22nd to place an order and take advantage of this great opportunity.

We'd also like let you know about some website reconstruction that will begin in January. As a means of improving customer satisfaction, there will be a commenting section for each product.
